Short Skills Programme

The short skills programme is a niche offering which provides a five month CTA certificate on completion. There are four unit standards modules in this programme and a comprehensive. CTA’s comprehensive driver training equips students for a successful start in the transport industry. Our expert instructors provide both the hands-on training and knowledge required to properly and safely operate a truck with the aim of providing post-learning support.

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Contextualising the road transport sector within the transport industry.

  • Describing vehicle components according to manufacturer specifications.

  • Planning for road transport trips according to specified contexts.

  • Explaining the impact of specific conditions in terms of vehicle and driver performance.

UNIT STANDARD 2

Load general freight (ID:123262)

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The purpose of the learning credited in this unit standard is to ensure that learners are able to safely load, secure and off-load freight carried on vehicles. Credited learners can adhere to given time frames and specified requirements for specific types of freight. Improved general freight loading prevents accidents where vehicles lose loads, and ensures that loads and persons are not damaged or injured. If the condition of loads is preserved, customer service and profitability are improved, and the professional image of the transport sector will be maintained. This set of competence is transferable to all other fields where loading of general freight is required, and thus improves the employability of credited learners.

  • Preparing for loading/off-loading processes according to specified procedures.

  • Loading general freight according to context requirements.

  • Securing general freight according to product requirements.

  • Off-loading general freight according to specified procedures.

UNIT STANDARD 3

Operate a vehicle combination (ID:123254)

PURPOSE OF THE UNIT STANDARD

The purpose of learning is to ensure safe, professional operation of vehicle combinations with a gross vehicle mass exceeding 3.5 tons, and consisting of a drawing vehicle and trailer/s. Credited learners can drive a specific vehicle combination in accordance with legal, safety, manufacturer and other relevant requirements and reflect on the manner in which the vehicle is operated.

Credited learners are capable of:
  • Preparing a vehicle combination for road transport trips according to specification.

  • Driving a vehicle combination in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Ensuring the maintenance of road transport service quality.

  • Handling unexpected situations according to specified procedures.

  • Parking vehicle combination in accordance with specified requirements.

  • Coupling and uncoupling a drawing vehicle and trailer/s according to specified procedures.

SUMMARY OF SHORT SKILLS PROGRAMME

  • Prepare learners for migration from code 8 and 10 Licence to code 14

  • Completion of 3 unit standards

  • Code 14 driving lessons

  • Learner’s Licence test

  • Driver’s Licence test

  • Practical experience in driving (minimum 50hrs)

  • Certificate issued by CTA
